Wall Shelf

Project Type

Personal Product

Date

April 2025

I enjoy the idea of having a desk riser or an extra platform on a desk, as it opens up new avenues for item storage and organization. The only drawback to something like this is that it still takes up space on the desk with legs or supports. So I thought of trying to install a floating shelf instead, and I designed and printed one with an added wood texture.

Initially, the planning behind the installation process was somewhat misguided and not very planful. I tried sticking it to the wall solely with adhesives and nail-free glue pads that I used to hold up other bulky items in the past. The result of the forces on the platform made it so that the platform toppled multiple times, to my dismay.

So I made some bracket supports to be drilled in, and bought short nails since I knew I couldn't drill all that deep into the concrete and steel structural walls. I then reinforced the edges with 3M sticker pads for weight reduction, as the supports also felt slightly unstable, requiring some superglue to fix the wall plugs in the holes.

So far, the modifications have worked well, and are showing no signs of decreasing integrity under the weight of my desk ornaments.
